Meta Bets on Lighter VR Glasses to Give the Metaverse Another Shot

Meta unveiled the VR Glasses, $1,299 virtual reality glasses that weigh about 100 grams, a fifth of the Quest 3. The launch is planned for spring 2027 in the Northern Hemisphere.

The secret to the lightness is taking off the face what weighs it down: the processor, battery, and storage sit in a separate module, about 300 grams, connected by a cable and carried in a pocket. The glasses themselves house micro-OLED screens with a combined 5K resolution, eye and hand tracking, and IMAX Enhanced certification. The battery promises up to three hours of video.

The bet is to make VR comfortable for long use, like movies, live sports, multi-screen work, and video calls. At the same time, the company is expanding its smart glasses lineup with Ray-Ban and Oakley, which should exceed 100 models, and wants to bring its AI assistant, Muse, to these devices.

The challenge is the track record. The Reality Labs division has already racked up more than $80 billion in operating losses, with a $4.6 billion loss in the second quarter alone. Meanwhile, Meta's stock rose about 35% in a month, buoyed by enthusiasm over Muse. It remains to be seen whether a high price and a cable in your pocket will win over the public.
