Portugal Changes IUC Calendar From 2027, September Deadline Stays

In Portugal, anyone with a vehicle first registered in September must pay this year's Imposto Único de Circulação (IUC) by September 30. The current rule, which ties the deadline to the registration month, only holds until the end of 2026.

Payment is made through the Portal das Finanças, following the path Cidadãos, Serviços, IUC and Entregar ano corrente, logging in with the NIF and password. Once the billing document is generated, payment can be made at the bank, at a Multibanco machine, or at the CTT.

Starting in 2027, under Decree-Law No. 161/2026, anyone with an annual IUC of up to 500 euros will pay it all in October. Above that amount, it can be split between July and October or paid in full in July. It will also be possible to request cancellation of the charge if the registration is cancelled before the anniversary date, and the exemption for people with disabilities will have a cap of 240 euros per year.

The Automóvel Club de Portugal approved the simplification but continues to advocate for scrapping the tax altogether. The vehicle trade sector, meanwhile, fears that concentrating payments into just a few months will strain the cash flow of families and businesses.
